Downtown Pittsburgh Traffic Shifts for Major Bus Rapid Transit Project

Written by Christine Julia Dingzon

Traffic patterns in Downtown Pittsburgh are changing significantly as work progresses on the Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, a major initiative to improve transit efficiency and sustainability between Oakland and Downtown Pittsburgh. The new line, named The University Line, aims to ease congestion by prioritizing bus travel along the busy Fifth and Sixth Avenue corridors.

Over the next two weeks, road adjustments will include sidewalk expansions, making pedestrian access easier, and the installation of bus-priority signals to allow for faster and more streamlined bus movement. These changes mark an important phase in the $291 million project

The goal is to boost transit and is anticipated to be fully operational by 2027. The initial phase will see the completion of 5 new transit stations, each designed with accessibility and commuter convenience in mind. Eventually the BRT will include 18 stations, providing comprehensive transit options for residents, students, and workers who rely on public transportation daily.

The Independence Excavating Inc. will begin work this Monday from 8 PM to 6 PM and 9 AM to 3 PM.

In addition to easing congestion and reducing commute times, the BRT is expected to enhance the downtown experience, making the area more pedestrian-friendly and accessible. As construction continues, the community is encouraged to stay informed about temporary road adjustments to help navigate these changes smoothly.
