Economic Growth: Visitors and New Business Lead the Way
Downtown Pittsburgh’s economy remains robust, with 1.6 million monthly visitors recorded in September 2024, marking a 3.16% increase. While hotel occupancy decreased slightly by 10.14% to 133,000 bookings, the continued growth of over 20 new businesses last year signals a thriving retail and service environment. This expansion sets the stage for a strong 2024 as downtown Pittsburgh adapts to post-pandemic trends.
A Cleaner Downtown: Efforts Pay Off
Efforts to maintain a pristine downtown have shown significant progress. In September 2024, the city cleaned 344,020 square feet of sidewalks and 162,764 square feet of alleys, marking increases of 106.76% and 20.47% respectively. A total of 112,618 pounds of garbage were removed, and 216 instances of graffiti were addressed. The city’s commitment to cleanliness was also supported by 846 volunteer hours, a 133.70% increase, underscoring the community's engagement in keeping downtown beautiful.
Safety Improves: Crime Rates Continue to Drop
Safety in downtown Pittsburgh has improved, with 2,885 police dispatches and no reported homicides, rapes, or arsons. Property crimes decreased, with only 1 reported aggravated assault, 1 reported burglary, and 1 reported auto theft. Additionally, the 100% clearance rate for 2 reported thefts from autos reflects the ongoing commitment to security. There was also a 29.17% decrease in drug incidents, and no incidents of shots fired were reported, contributing to a safer and more secure environment.
Vibrancy in Action: Downtown Continues to Thrive
Downtown Pittsburgh’s vibrancy continued to thrive, with 1.6 million monthly visitors, a 3.16% increase, and 3,875 POGOH bike rides ending in the Golden Triangle, reflecting a 3.01% rise. In September, 73 outdoor events were hosted in Mellon and Market Square, marking a significant 108.57% increase. The area also saw an average of 53,360 daily visitors, a 6.60% increase, contributing to the lively and bustling atmosphere of downtown.
With these impressive indicators, downtown Pittsburgh shows strong momentum heading into the new year. The city’s growth in economy, cleanliness, safety, and vibrancy reflects its continued transformation into a thriving hub for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
