Green Light for Change: New Signals to Boost Safety and Speed for Downtown Pittsburgh Transit
Written by Christine Julia Dingzon
In the coming weeks, significant improvements are set to transform the Downtown Pittsburgh intersections. The Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) has announced the installation of new traffic signals, a total of 35 will be installed. This initiative is designed to enhance public transit flow between Oakland and Downtown Pittsburgh, both of which are among Pennsylvania’s largest economic centers.
These upgrades will not only facilitate smooth transit operations, but will also provide lasting benefits for pedestrians, creating a safer and more accessible environment for all. The new signals will feature buttons for pedestrians to request crossings, audio announcements indicating when it is safe to cross, and illuminated countdowns to enhance safety.
Installation has already begun, with 16 intersections along Fifth, Sixth, and Liberty avenues receiving new lights. These streets will serve as the main routes for buses in the New Bus Rapid Transit System. Streets with new signals will include exclusive lanes for five bus routes on the University Line, all equipped with traffic light priority at every intersection. This system will fully take effect once the control center is operational.
Construction will occur at one intersection at a time on weekdays from 9 AM to 3 PM, with each installation expected to take one to two days. The installation should have minimal impact on traffic.
These traffic lights are part of a broader project, the University Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, aimed at improving accessibility for residents traveling from Uptown to Oakland and to expect more reliable and on-time services. Future enhancements will focus on upgrading sidewalks and crosswalks, as well as adding 18 new transit stations, protected bike lanes, and many more. While the entire project is estimated for completion in 2027, priority will be given to the installation of the new traffic lights first, with additional enhancements planned to further improve the overall transit experience.
