In-Person Permitting Assistance Now Available Downtown

Written by Allison Frazer

Citizens can now apply for and receive permits in-person as the city opens the One Stop PGH permitting counter at 412 Boulevard of the Allies Downtown.

Mayor Ed Gainey spoke at the unveiling of the new location, stating the in-person permit counter was “long overdue.”

Developers and residents alike have pushed for an in-person in past years, and were backed by city officials.

All permitting had been moved to an online version in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While useful then to continue somewhat normal activity, applicants found issues with the online format. Some reported the process was unclear and didn’t know if their application had been submitted or received, and others found it frustrating and required human help.

Now, residents have the option of performing their business online or drop-in or schedule an appointment online to receive in-person services.

Citizens can apply and can request help for business and trade licenses, planning applications and development, and right-of-way or fire code permits. Applicants will also have the opportunity to make a payment in person.

The new location at 412 Boulevard of the Allies is home to the Department of Permits, Licenses and Inspections, the Department of City Planning, and the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, as well as the city’s Urban Redevelopment Authority and Housing Authority, making the building a hub for developers and city planners.

Visit the city website for permits, licenses, and inspections for more information.
