National Read a Book Day: Learn More About Pittsburgh By Reading These 5 Books

September 6th is National Read a Book Day and is the perfect day to pick up a book and learn more about our great city. Whether you like to read fiction or nonfiction, mysteries or even graphic novels, here are 5 books about Pittsburgh that are sure to give you a greater understanding of the Burgh and some of our customs and traditions.

1.Heiress of Pittsburgh by Ken Gormley 

This novel, written by Duquesne University President Ken Gormley, details the work of Swissvale native and attorney Shawn Rossi as he handles the estate of his college ex-girlfriend, Marjorie. As the case progresses, shocking family secrets are revealed and Shawn finds himself fighting his past while trying to create a better future for his family. 

2. Kaufmann’s: The Big Store in Pittsburgh by Letitia Stuart Savage

The Kaufmann building is one of Downtown Pittsburgh’s most iconic and historic buildings. This book captures Jake and Isaac Kaufmann’s journey of turning their small Southside store into The Golden Triangle’s shopping metropolis.


3. Pittsburgh by Frank Santoro 

"Pittsburgh" is a graphic novel by Frank Santoro that provides a poignant and autobiographical exploration of the author's upbringing in Pittsburgh.
