By Layla Joseph
Allegheny Regional Asset District (RAD) has announced that attendance to three popular Pittsburgh museums will be free during the month of August this year.
Admission to the Andy Warhol Museum, Heinz History Center and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh will cost nothing to guests all August long.
These museums receive grants annually from RAD to support the daily operations of each facility. In celebration of the three museums being voted in the top five of three different categories in USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
In addition to free admission in the month of August, free-admission RAD Days will begin in September. Last year, the regional assets offered 102 free events and rounded up over 20,000 people for combined attendance.
RAD is public funding that supports quality of life for county residents through annual grants. The organization generates revenue through a 1% local sales tax implemented in 1993.
For each taxable dollar spent by residents and tourists, one penny is dropped into RAD’s piggy bank and used to supplement resources to make the city awe-inspiring and help deter raising taxes.
According to RAD’s website, that money is collected by the Treasury and then reallocated, with half of those funds providing support for public wants and needs such as local libraries, parks, regional attractions, public transportation and other amenities offered by the city.
The other half of the income is shared between Allegheny County and the 128 municipalities in an effort to ease the strain on taxpayers.
By opening the doors to some of the country's top rated museums according to USA Today, RAD is opening more opportunities for community members.
