Arcade Comedy: Pittsburgh’s Hub for Affordable, Unique and Unrepeatable Comedy

Written by Delaney Pipon

In downtown Pittsburgh, there's a place where $15 buys you a night of unrepeatable comedy and the drinks are on you. Arcade Comedy Theater, a nonprofit venue in the Cultural District, has been offering this refreshing alternative for over a decade.

Founded in 2013, Arcade set out to fill a gap in Pittsburgh's arts scene. "We wanted to create a space that embraces all forms of comedy," explains Executive Director Katie Tarara. "From the familiar comedic forms like stand up, sketch, and improv to harder-to -find things like clowning, puppetry, and game shows, we have a bit of everything."

What truly sets Arcade apart is its commitment to one-of-a-kind experiences. With 95% of performers hailing from the local area, each show is a unique event that will never be replicated. "Whether it's improv with audience participation or a diverse stand-up lineup, you're always in for something new," Tarara notes.

Accessibility is at the heart of Arcade's mission. Tickets typically run $15, and the theater's BYOB policy allows patrons to enjoy their favorite drinks without the burden of overpriced bar tabs. This approach has made Arcade a go-to spot for those seeking an affordable night out without sacrificing quality entertainment.

The theater's impact extends beyond its stage. Arcade offers improv, sketch, and stand-up comedy classes, which have become a popular way for newcomers to Pittsburgh to meet people and build connections. "We strive to be a welcoming space for everyone," Tarara emphasizes.

Recently, Arcade has begun catering to group outings, offering discounted rates and reserved seating for parties of 10 or more. It's quickly becoming a favorite choice for bachelorette parties and other group celebrations looking for something different. The theater even offers workshops and classes for professional development that use comedy principles to help build trust and communication among teams of coworkers.

As Pittsburgh's comedy scene continues to grow, Arcade Comedy Theater remains a steadfast presence, offering a blend of affordability, community, and fun. For locals and visitors alike, it's a chance to experience the city's creative spirit firsthand – and have a good laugh while doing it.
