Developer’s Forum Drives Transformation

Written by Allison Frazer

Downtown Neighbors Alliance hosted the Developer’s Forum where city leaders shared upcoming improvements to Downtown. The panel focused on Point Park University’s recent announcement of a new community events center and the future of the city.

The forum, moderated by DNA Pittsburgh’s executive director, John Valentine, featured Mayor Ed Gainey, Point Park University President Chris Brussalis, and City of Pittsburgh Chief Economic Development Officer, Kyle Chintalapalli.

Brussalis emphasized the importance of PPU’s location and its impact on the city’s future. “We believe that downtowns are going to be driven by the creative economy… [the] arts, entertainment, recreational life.”

Point Park has experienced a 10% increase in enrollment in the past year. Brussalis forecasts bringing “1,000 people learning, living, working and playing in Downtown Pittsburgh.”

Mayor Gainey highlighted the importance of the Pittsburgh Police’s impact on the safety of Downtown. He noted that Downtown’s safety is reflected in the bustling nightlife scene on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. “The fear factor is more of a perception than it is reality” Gainey reports. “It is packed down there.”

The panelists expressed excitement about the 2026 NFL Draft being held in Pittsburgh. Gainey sees this event as an opportunity to show the nation Pittsburgh’s rebrand: “ We are no longer a steel town city. We are a technology-driven city.”

The NFL Draft’s presence will boost the local economy. Experts estimate the event bringing more than 300,000 people to Pittsburgh. With other smaller events occuring during the draft, it is estimated that the city will see $120-160 million in revenue.

The forecast of Downtown’s future is bright, as city leaders create innovative ways to boost the local economy and design community spaces that promote creativity.
