Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

Written by Allison Frazer

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we would like to spotlight the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce - an organization that is changing lives in downtown Pittsburgh.

Led by Melanie Marie Boyer, the PMAHCC “advocates for the Hispanic business community’s civic and economic interests.” Their mission is to “develop, promote and advocate on behalf of Hispanic businesses & professionals in the Pittsburgh region, while encouraging the advancement and economic growth of Pittsburgh’s Hispanic community.”

The PMAHCC provides a number of services for the Hispanic community of Pittsburgh, including a job board, small business grants, scholarships for students, student mentoring, discounts and networking opportunities. These programs allow for the local Hispanic community and economy to be boosted, aiding in the prosperity of the entire Pittsburgh region.

Their various events provide an opportunity to connect with the board of directors and members of the PMAHCC and the larger Hispanic community in Pittsburgh. One upcoming event is the Sabores Latinos Festival: Foods, Drinks, and Giving Back on October 4 from 6:30-10:00 P.M. at the Rivers Club at 301 Grant Street Suite 411. Here, attendees will be able to take salsa dance lessons, peruse a vendor market, enjoy dancing and live music as well as a DJ, and taste some delicious hors d’oeuvres that will be served throughout the night.

Another event on October 24 from 6-9 P.M. is the Ofrenda Happy Hour: A Dia de los Muertos Kickoff Celebration. This party will take place at the Greer Cabaret Theater at 655 Penn Ave. Here, attendees can appreciate and interact with two “mural-like” ofrendas where they can help make and place ornaments to honor loved ones, enjoy live music and a DJ, and savor hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar.

Be sure to check out all the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has to offer to make new connections and new opportunities.
