Market Square Modernization Project Begins Today

Today marks the start of the Market Square Modernization project, a major step in the $600 million public-private investment led by Governor Shapiro, in efforts to revitalize Downtown Pittsburgh. The project aims to enhance Market Square’s infrastructure and appeal while preserving access for businesses and visitors throughout construction.

Over the past 10 months, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP) has worked closely with Market Square stakeholders, holding meetings and one-on-one discussions to gather feedback. This collaborative effort helped shape the construction plan, ensuring it balances progress with the needs of the community.

Throughout the project, the PDP will provide regular updates and support. Construction managers will be on-site daily, and businesses can reach out with questions or concerns through this email, construction@downtownpittsburgh.com. Weekly emails will outline upcoming construction activity, while real-time alerts will notify businesses of any schedule changes.

To reduce the impact, the project will maintain pedestrian access, keep front-door entry open for all businesses, and schedule work near storefronts during off-hours whenever possible. Enhanced safety measures will also be implemented, including new lights, additional security cameras, and expanded cleaning efforts.

The PDP is committed to supporting Market Square merchants throughout this process. A financial assistance program is being developed for small businesses, and plans are underway to expand outdoor dining areas. Marketing efforts, including social media highlights, special events, and media outreach, will promote Market Square and encourage foot traffic during construction.
