Pittsburgh’s Allegheny Riverfront Park is undergoing a much-needed transformation, with Riverlife leading a $5.4 million rehabilitation project. This initiative aims to restore the upper promenade, a key pedestrian space overlooking the Allegheny River, while modernizing its infrastructure for future generations.

The renovation covers the stretch from the Sixth to Ninth Street Bridges, commonly known as The Three Sisters Bridges. Over the past 25 years, the park has faced significant wear and tear, particularly its bluestone pavers, which have deteriorated due to harsh weather conditions and road salt. The reconstruction will replace these stones with more durable materials arranged in a studier design.

Beyond repairs, the project will also focus on enhancing the park’s usability. Plans include planting 35 new trees, widening pedestrian pathways, and expanding open areas to accommodate public art, small events, and even food trucks. These upgrades aim to make the promenade a more inviting and functional space for both residents and visitors.

Riverlife is working in collaboration with the City of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and landscape architecture firm MVVA. Funding has been secured from various sources, including Heinz Endowments, the Richard King Mellon Foundation, and the Allegheny Regional Asset District. Additionally, a $1 million endowment has been created to support long-term park maintenance.

The renovation is expected to be completed by late 2025, just in time for the NFL Draft, which Pittsburgh will host in April 2026. Once the upper promenade is completed, Riverlife plans to shift its focus to restoring the lower riverfront trail as part of its larger vision to complete a continuous 15-mile riverfront loop.

This project reflects Pittsburgh’s commitment to revitalize public spaces, ensuring they remain accessible, durable, and enjoyable for years to come. With improved walkways, more greenery, and expanded gathering areas, Allegheny Riverfront Park will once again be a vibrant and welcoming part of the city.
