Support Local Teachers For World Teachers Day

By Layla Joseph

One person is around your child almost as much as you are– their teacher. On Oct. 5, World Teacher Day can remind you to appreciate your child’s educator.

According to the Department of Education, your child’s teacher fosters curiosity and creativity while turning students into skillful individuals who are informed citizens.

Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) employs over 1,800 teachers in 54 schools around the city. According to its website, PPS believes that teachers have a “profound impact on student development” and that families are an “essential part of the educational process.”

A partnership benefits the student when an educator works with the guardian and vice versa. Extramarks Education said that communication, consistency and collaboration can lead to parents knowing more about their child’s strengths and weaknesses, teachers developing more refined strategies and students enjoying greater academic success.

Open the door for consistent communication with a gesture that lets your child’s teacher know you appreciate them this World Teacher’s Day by sending them a token of gratification to acknowledge their efforts with your child and the work done in the classroom. Whether that token is as simple as a kind email or as generous as a card or gift is up to you.

DNA has curated a list of goodies under $10 from five Pittsburgh favorites we think teachers would love.

Yinz Coffee – Downtown, North Side

Buy your kid’s teacher a gift card for a cup of jo or grab a quart of Fancypants Popcorn for just $6 at one of Yinz Coffee’s eight locations around the town.

Posman Books – The Terminal

Head to The Terminal and grab a gift for your kiddo’s classroom or gift card to-go. Among the books at Posman’s are a variety of puzzles, activities, magnets, bookmarks, stickers and more. Grab a book for under $10 to add to the classroom library and handwrite a letter inside, or get something that will stick with your child’s educator, like a magnet or sticker, for under $5.

City Grows – The Terminal

Pick up a gift that will grow with your child throughout the year. Small plants like succulents, bog plants and many others will run you between $5 to $10 and would be a thoughtful classroom gift.

No matter how big or small the gesture might be, saying thank you to your child’s educator on World Teacher’s Day can bring more positivity to your child’s classroom.
