Sustainable Pittsburgh Names Bhavini Patel Executive Director

In January, Sustainable Pittsburgh declared Bhavini Patel new Executive Director of the organization. She succeeded Joylette Portlock, Ph.D, who served for six years. Sustainable Pittsburgh is a nonprofit in Downtown that works to share sustainable knowledge, implement sustainable practices, and advance their mission of equity, environmental, and economic success. By creating communities and influencing policies, Sustainable Pittsburgh offers a material, practical approach to sustainability in the region. Working with stakeholders, the 501c3 has prioritized social equity and carbon reductions (hence combating climate change) for decades. Sustainability Pittsburgh affirms that sustainability is a comprehensive, ongoing commitment for our future health and belonging.

Bhavini Patel is a public servant and community leader. ​​She previously served as the Community Outreach Manager in the Office of Allegheny County under Executive Fitzgerald. She currently serves as an elected official on the Edgewood Borough Council. She co-founded and led beamdata, the 2020 civic tech startup that brought us Be the Change, a platform for civic accountability in PA. Patel volunteers on several boards across the city such as Pitt Master of Quantitative Economics Advisory Board and Footbridge for Families. A Pittsburgh-area native herself, the Director has dedicated her career to advocating for the Pittsburgh people and their home. Additionally, Patel has been recognized by the Pittsburgh Business Times’ 30 Under 30 and Pittsburgh Magazine’s 40 Under 40.
