Beverly's Birthdays Support In-Need Youth

By Layla Joseph

A free community baby shower will be hosted for new or expecting caregivers at Pittsburgh Marriott City Center on Tuesday, August 8.

The community baby shower requires registration but includes no charge for new or expecting guardians. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will help families in need prepare for their newborn.

The event is one of three free community baby showers this month brought to the people of greater Pittsburgh by Beverly’s Birthdays: a nonprofit that was founded in 2012 whose mission is to provide birthday celebrations to youth who are homeless or part of families in need.

While Beverly’s Birthdays primarily serves Allegheny County, the organization has partnered with over 150 social service agencies and 58 schools across seven counties in western Pennsylvania.

In 2022 Beverly’s Birthdays expanded to include supporting families for actual “birth” days with Beverly’s Babies.

In addition to the free in-person community baby showers, Beverly’s Babies provides its partner network with “Itty Bitty Diaper Bags” that includes a stylish bag, diapers, wipes, information about sleeping safely and more important items for expecting parents.

The non-profit launched its initiative “A Formula for Cheer” and opened The Greater Pittsburgh Infant Formula Bank through Beverly’s Babies in partnership with Hello Baby, Allegheny County DHS and Allegheny County Family Centers.

June of 2022, the first public formula bank was opened in the area; now, there are six throughout the region. Families in need can receive up to 12 cans of formula in their baby’s first year.

Beverly’s has been feeding babies across the greater Pittsburgh area. Find out the closest location to you and the formula that’s in stock at each location.

In the seven months during 2022 when the formula banks were operating, 537 babies were supported and over half of their families were experiencing financial difficulties according to Beverly’s Birthdays annual report.

Just a little over one year since Beverly’s Babies was founded, 4,000 babies in Pittsburgh have benefited from the programs the organization provides.

For the Pittsburghers who have everything they need but want to help Beverly’s Birthdays support the youth in our city, find out how you can get involved with volunteering, collections or donations.
