Denham & Co. Salon: Downtown Pittsburgh’s Destination for Style and Sophistication

Denham & Co. Salon is more than just a place for a haircut. It is a space filled with history, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to style and care. Owners Tim and Rick have been shaping the local hair industry for decades. Tim began his hairstyling career in the 1990s and became a salon owner in the mid-90s. The original salon, located above Nicholas Coffee & Tea Co., quickly built a strong reputation within the community.
Seven years ago, an unexpected tragedy struck when a fire consumed their original location. As they watched their salon burn, Tim and Rick noticed a nearby building for rent. They immediately scheduled a viewing and, within six weeks, transformed the space into a new home for Denham & Co. The move turned out to be serendipitous, allowing them to build something even grander while maintaining the welcoming environment they always valued.
The salon’s name is a reflection of Tim’s identity and the community around him. Tim realized that many of his clients only knew him by his first name, and so he wanted a name that felt personal yet inclusive. This led to the creation of Denham & Co., representing not only Tim but also the talented stylists and loyal clients who bring life to the salon.
Walking into Denham Salon, the first impression is one of grandeur. The space, once home to the historic Diamond Bank, retains its original architectural details, including intricate ceilings and an old vault. Complimenting this historic charm, modern white laminate floors and illuminated shelving create a polished yet inviting atmosphere. Tim describes the vibe as “fancy, but we like it to be welcoming and friendly. A professional feel, but not stuffy or uptight.”
As an Aveda concept salon, Denham & Co. emphasizes cruelty-free, vegan, and naturally derived products. Their commitment to sustainability extends to recycling initiatives and eco-friendly practices. The most popular services include color treatments, which Aveda’s products make gentler on the hair, and hair extensions, a growing trend that many of their stylists are certified in.
Looking toward the future, Tim and Rick have considered expanding, with the possibility of opening a second or even a third location. Rick expresses about the revitalization of Downtown Pittsburgh. “We’re looking forward to new spaces opening up. A lot of people are moving downtown and we’re seeing a lot of workers return to PPG and the surrounding area.” Their vision aligns with the city’s resurgence, and they are eager to continue growing alongside the community.
When it comes to hair care, the duo believes in simplicity and quality. Tim advocates for practical yet stylish haircuts, saying that “it’s always best to try to find a sensible hairstyle that looks good on you that requires not much effort. If you can get a hairstyle that looks good after you come out of the ocean and it dries naturally on the beach, then it’s going to look good when you put a little effort into styling it.” Rick emphasizes the importance of using high-quality products. “Invest in products without fillers. A lot of times, less is more.”
