The Warren Bar and Burrow, A Downtown Favorite for Sushi and Cocktails

Written by Molly Green

The Warren Bar and Burrow, located at 245 7th St, is a neighborhood favorite featuring craft cocktails, a warm atmosphere, and a diverse menu ranging from fried finger foods to sushi rolls. They’re open from 5 pm (or 4 pm on weekends) to 2 am every day.

The bar was founded in 2018 by Spencer Warren, a local cocktail specialist, who sought to bring his travel experience and cocktail creativity to his hometown. Warren’s experience spans decades. He opened Pittsburgh’s first craft cocktail bar, Embury, in 2008. Although it closed three years after opening, its impact was widely felt by Pittsburgh bartenders and business owners, who were inspired to expand Pittsburgh’s cocktail scene.

The Warren is partnered with Penn Cove Eatery, who serve up scrumptious Asian fusion sushi and small bites till 11 pm each night. You can choose from a long list of classic rolls to The Warren’s specialty rolls, like the Jumbo Johnny (Spicy tuna, salmon, shrimp tempura, avocado, lettuce and eel sauce) or the Orange Dragon roll (Shrimp tempura, asparagus, and eel sauce). Not only do they serve sushi, they also offer flatbreads, sandwiches, salads, desserts, and shareables galore before they close up their late night kitchen at midnight. Customers especially rave about the chicken katsu sandwich and the sweet potato tots.

If you’re looking to drink, they offer wine, beer, spirits, and a myriad of craft cocktails. Try the Fred’s Old Fashioned (Green Cardamom / Winter Spices / Peach), rated #1 old-fashioned in the country by the Wall Street Journal, or the Moonlit Irish (Irish whiskey / Luxurious / Bittersweet / Chocolate). Some of the newer items on the menu include the Spicy Diablo Pasta, the 12 Drummer cocktail, and the Barrel Aged Bobby Burns cocktail.

The popular bar, recently awarded 2024 TABLE Magazine Cocktail Shake-off Champs, has a lively social media presence. On Instagram, they have nearly 10,000 followers. Their feed features a cohesive aesthetic of food/drink pictures and clips. They often shout out their first-rate bartenders, who make up the heart of the operation.
