Vote For Your Favorite Pittsburgh Architecture For AIA Pittsburgh's People's Choice Award

By Olivia Miller

Architecture is all around us. Though you may not realize it, every piece of our built environment, from the pointy, crown-shaped glass columns of PPG Place to the looming dark facade of the US Steel Tower and the neo-gothic look of the Union Trust, has been expertly handcrafted by skilled architects.

Pittsburgh’s chapter of The American Institute of Architects has made it their mission to build awareness about the city’s architectural gems while highlighting the professionals who have built them from the ground up.

Their Design Pittsburgh People’s Choice Award, which is part of their 2023 Pittsburgh Architecture Week initiative, allows the public to reflect on what the architecture they use in their daily lives means to them. When viewing the nominees, voters are encouraged to think about how they are inspired by the structure and how the project enhances the greater community.

The voting is broken into four categories: conceptual projects, large builds, medium builds and small builds.

Conceptual projects in the Golden Triangle Area include a large, Andy Warhol-inspired entertainment complex located near the iconic art museum as well as a futuristic reimagining of a system linking Downtown’s riverfronts.

Large builds in Downtown Pittsburgh up for the award include The Strip District’s premiere mixed-use venue, The Stacks at 3 Crossing, the modern renovations at Fifth Avenue Place, one of the newest add-ons to The Strip District, The Vision on Fifteenth, and Downtown’s favorite Eighth and Penn.

As for medium builds, Downtown’s hottest new eatery, Ritual House, the prestigious Duquesne University’s Palumbo-Donahue School of Business, as well as Uptown’s Second Avenue Commons are all in the running.

Duquesne University’s Rangos Anatomy Lab as well as the repurposed space housing Downtown’s La Prima are in the category for small builds.

You can see all of the structures up for the award and learn more about the purpose and vision behind the above buildings by clicking here to visit the AIA’s website. Voting is open from now until Oct. 8.
